Description: The talk is focused on kidney health in canine and feline patients: The important function kidneys play and how to assess overall kidney health including recognizing the differences acute kidney injury versus chronic kidney disease. SDMA has become widely accepted as an early functional biomarker for chronic kidney disease in pets. However, new data show that a single mild increase in SDMA can be a medical turning point. the talk discusses the role SDMA plays in 5 key patient profiles, and how trending of results can offer preemptive opportunities to address potential changes in kidney function earlier than traditional functional biomarkers. Cystatin B will also be discussed. Learning Objectives: 1. What is the function of kidneys? - Recall the role the kidneys play in overall health 2. How do we assess kidney health? - Describe the different biomarkers for glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and what they tell us 3. What is kidney disease? - Recognize the difference between acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) - Explain how AKI and CKD can differ between cats and dogs 4. How has our understanding of kidney health evolved? - Recognize the importance of staging and managing changes in kidney function 5. Which patients should receive testing for kidney function? - Review five patient profiles where testing for kidney function is important Please register at the link below: |
